Like any other country rich in culture and history, there are several national holidays that Dominican Republic celebrates. The celebrations of their national holidays are deep with meaning and diversity. The country being significantly influenced by Catholicism, has a number of national holidays that celebrate their patron saint and virgin. There are also important holidays in honor of people who have done a great deal for the country.

Here is a list of the National Holidays in Dominican Republic:

January 1st

Año Nuevo or New Year's Day

January 6th

Dia de los Reyes Magos or Dia de los Santos Reyes or Epiphany

In a lot of Catholic countries, this celebration is a time for Christmas fun. This is one of the national holidays in Dominican Republic where children traditionally receive gifts on this day rather than on Christmas. The celebration symbolizes the Three Kings bringing gifts, and people exchange gifts and children put out their shoes for where the magi leaves the present inside.

Nuestra Sra. de Altagracia or Day of our Lady of Altagracia

The feast is in honor of the Dominican Patroness or Our Lady of the Highest Grace, which is the patron virgin of the Dominican Republic.

January 26th

Juan Pablo Duarte Day or Duarte's Day

The celebration commemorates the hero of Dominican Republic independence from Haiti, and who was the first of the three founding fathers of the country.

Christmas Day

In a lot of Catholic countries, people attend the midnight mass on Christmas Eve, and prepare traditional food which is an integral part of the holiday. However, it is important to take note that for most Dominicans, Christmas day is not a big deal even if it's a national holiday. The real Dominican Nativity is celebrated on Christmas Eve which is the time when the family gets together to share a late-night dinner or La Nochebuena with plenty of foods and too much to drink like American Thanksgiving dinner.

Other non-working days include Good Friday (April), Easter (April), Corpus Christi (Thursday in June), and all the Sundays of the year, Mother's Day (last Sunday of May), and Father's Day (last Sunday of June).
